Mahabharatha is one of the greatest epics of the Hindus. It was authored by the sage Vyasa. Lord Ganesha was his scribe. Ganesha wrote the Mahabharatha using the tip of his right tusk as a pen. Sage Vyasa, the son of sage Parasara, composed this great epic. He needed someone to write it down for him, so he prayed for a solution. Lord Brahma suggested Lord Ganesha. When the sage approached him, Ganesha laid down the condition that he would write it only if the sage dictated the story without a pause. The sage agreed with a condition that Ganesha should write only what he understood.
Ganesha decided to use the tip of his tusk since it was hard and would not break, putting a brake to his writing. So the story writing commenced. Since Lord Ganesha took some time to understand the complicated verses, Vyasa got some breathing time to compose his next verse.
This story has been translated into many languages. There are many versions of this story as it has been passed down generations by word of mouth.
It is not one story but hundreds of small stories put together. It is about the sons of two brothers Pandu and Dhritharashtra, and their fight over the kingdom of Hastinapura. It is mainly about good triumphing over evil. It tells us about all the weaknesses of man - hatred, greed, jealousy and lust. These are the driving forces in this story.
Even today in India, in villages, the Mahabharatha is enacted on makeshift stages (called a nautanki) and is the main source of entertainment to the simple villagers. It is a favorite bedtime story for children all over India.
