Lord Ganesh

India is a land of Gods. People here worship God in numerous forms-Ganesha, Krishna, Rama and many others. Mind you God takes the female form too as in Laxmi, Durga, Saraswati and Kali.

The idols are sculpted with great intricacy and beauty. Indians love to dress their Gods in elaborate finery and deck them with flowers and jewels. Indians have built many beautiful temples not only in India, but also all over the world. Many of them are architectural marvels even today.

Temples are not only places of worship but are also places where people socialize. It is only nowadays that temples are slowly being replaced by clubs. Here people meet and chat. Many a marriage is fixed here. Matching of horoscopes takes place and "a marriage is made in an Indian temple".

In the evenings there are discourses on the ancient scriptures. Temples have been known to encourage dance and music from the ancient times. Men and women dress in colorful silks and visit temples.

Prayers (pooja) are offered to God both in the mornings and evenings. This involves chanting of mantras, offering flowers, fruits, sweets and food of various types. Food offered to God (prasada) is then distributed among the devotees along with the holy tulsi water.
