Rangolis or kolus are designs usually drawn in the
courtyard in front of the house or in the God's room. These are usually
drawn with rice powder and filled with colors. These are drawn for various
reasons - to welcome people to their homes, to invite Goddess Laxmi or to
ward of evil from the house.
Traditionally the women of the house would wash the
courtyard early in the morning and draw rangolis with rice powder. Each
would vie over the other to draw bigger and more intricate designs.
During Diwali children in most houses in India draw
beautiful designs in front of their houses and color them with bright
colors.
