One of the first things Hindus try to teach their children is shlokas or sthotras. These are Sanskrit verses composed by our great rishis long, long ago. These shlokas are usually in praise of the virtues and beauty of God. Some shlokas also lay down the moral path to be followed by mankind. It is believed that chanting of certain Sanskrit shlokas gives the person power, wealth, good health, victory over enemies and protection from all evils. Below are some Ganesha shlokas that can be chanted every day, in the morning or before starting any important work. It is believed that Lord Ganesha removes all obstacles and is responsible for the successful completion of any venture. While chanting these holy mantras it is very important to calm oneself. It helps if one chants the word "OM" over and over again. With mind free from all evil thoughts one can achieve some sort of mental peace by chanting these mantras.
Hear all the shlokas:
This is a prayer to Lord Ganesha. Om guru Brahma guru Vishnuhu Guru devo Maheswaraha Guru saakshath parabramha tasmai shree guravenamaha (Our Guru is Lord Vishnu, Our Guru is Lord Maheshwara. Our Guru is Lord Brahma To this Guru that I pray.) Vandeham Manglaathmaanam bhasvantham veda vigraham Yaatnya valkyam munishreshtam jishnum hariharaprabham (I pray to Ganesha, who blesses good deeds, who shines brightly with the knowledge of the vedas. who leads rishis who perform yagnas. He, who is superior to all the rishis, And has control over all the senses, like Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.) Jitendriyam jitakrodham sadaa dhyaana paraajanam Aananda nilayam vande yoga nandam muneeshwaram (I pray to Ganesha, who has mastery over all senses, He, who has complete control over anger. He is always in deep meditation, happiness surrounds him. He is in a yogic trance, Head of rishis, I bow to him.) Vedaanta vedyam sakalaagamatnyam Daya sudha sindhu vanantha roopam Shree yaatnya valkyam paripoorna chandram Shree mad gurum nityam mahan namami (He who has knowledge of the vedas He, whose love is infinite as the ocean of amrut, Whose knowledge is as full as a full moon, It is to this superior Guru that I pray.)
This small prayer is usually chanted before starting anything auspicious. This prayer invokes Lord Ganesha, who has a huge body and twisted trunk to remove all obstacles which normally come our way while we start any new work. Vakratunda mahaakaaya Koti soorya samaprabha Nirvighnam kurumedeva Sarvakaaryeshu sarvadaa.
